Second Trimester – week 14 through 27 weeks

first trimester

The fourth, fifth, and six month pregnancy are called the Second Trimester pregnancy.

By the end of the second trimester, your baby is around 14 inches long and weighs around 1kg. From the forth month onwards, mother starts feeling baby’s first kicks. Some women notice the early symptoms like nausea and fatigue going away, but other new noticeable body changes happen with belly getting bigger, breasts enlarging, and stretch marks to begin.

Your baby now starts sucking her thumb. Eyelashes and eyebrows appear, but her eyes remain closed till the end of this trimester. Her skin begins to grow a coating of fine hair called lanugo, which sheds just before or after the delivery. At this time, your baby also develops a whitish greasy coating called vernix.

Women, who are getting relief from the early pregnancy symptoms, can now start thinking about buying maternity clothes, baby names, and baby showers. There are just many that you can plan for.

Your second trimester pregnancy symptoms may include:

  • Your skin around your nipples getting darker.
  • Body pains such as back pain, abdomen pain, and groin pain.
  • Stretch marks develop on your breasts, abdomen, thighs, or buttocks.
  • Linea migra - a line on your skin running from belly button to pubic hairline.
  • Dark skin patches over the nose, cheeks, forehead, or upper lip.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome – Numbness or tingling sensation on hands.
  • Swelling on your ankles, fingers, and face. (Call your doctor if you see any sudden swelling or weight gain, as this could be a sign of preeclampsia).
  • Itching sensation on the palms, abdomen, and soles of the feet.
