Andaman is a group of islands that covers a major part of the UT of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. This group of islands is very closer to countries like Thailand and Myanmar when compared to the mainland of India. 

Lies in the Bay of Bengal, Andaman Islands are one of the most romantic destinations in the Indian subcontinent. There are many beautiful beaches & tourist attractions here; Havelock Island is one of the most popular islands in the entire UT. Historic monuments, churches, national parks, caves, and adventure activities are things that tourists can visit during their holidays to Andaman. Barren Island, Mud Volcano, Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Neil Island, Radhanagar Beach, and Elephant Beach are some of the top places to visit in Andaman.


HOW TO REACH ANDAMAN

By Road - Andaman has no road connectivity.

By Rail - There is no rail network.

By Air - The best option to reach Andaman is to catch a flight to Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair (The largest town in the archipelago). Regular ships also are also there which operate to this town from Chennai, Kolkata, and Vishakhapatnam.


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR INDIAN NATIONALS

There is no permit needed to visit Andaman, but if you want to visit Nicobar Islands and other tribal areas there, you need to apply to the Deputy Commissioner, Andaman District, Port Blair. The permission may or may not be granted.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR FOREIGN NATIONALS

All Foreign Nationals need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Permits should be obtained from Indian Missions Overseas; Immigration Offices at Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Delhi and Immigration Authorities at airports in Port Blair, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Delhi. The permit is usually valid for 30 days and that too for certain tourist attractions only.

CLIMATE AND THE BEST TIME TO VISIT ANDAMAN

The best time of the year to visit the Andaman & Nicobar Islands is between October and May. This is also the time for annual tourism festival. The islands have a tropical climate with very minor fluctuations in temperature and an average 80% humidity all around the year. There is medium to heavy rain fall during the monsoons twice in a year from the month of May to mid September and November to mid December. The waters are very clear and placid after the monsoons, which makes it perfect for swimmers and snorkelers.

SIGHTSEEING AND PLACES TO VISIT IN ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS

Before going to sightseeing in the Andaman Islands, try to find out the visiting hours of the various attractions. Regular boat services are all accessible by regular boat services from Port Blair. 

Tourists who want to spend some quality of time amid peaceful surroundings can go to Corbyn's Cove, Long island, Elephant Beach, Neil Island and Little Andaman Island. Places like Samudrika Marine Museum, Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Science Centre, and Andaman Water Sports Complex are other major attractions, especially for children.

Thearchipelago is an ideal spot for water activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, and wind surfing. Camping on the beach and trekking through the dense forests are other adventure activities.

Andaman is a complete holiday destination for honeymooners, thrill seekers, and vacationers. Important places to visit in Andaman & Nicobar Islands are beaches, jails, parks, span islands, museums, and all of these are within a radius of 20km of Port Blair.

MG Marine National Park at Wandoor is 29km drive from Port Blair is very famous for its beautiful beaches, fish and marine life, and fascinating coral reefs.

The Gandhi Park has an amusement park; water sports facilities, deer park, and a restaurant.

Marina Park is built on the seashore. Viper Island is the gallows still stand is guaranteed to give you the excitement!

Gandhi Park is a good base to visit the islands of Jolly Buoy and Redskin for water sports like scuba diving and snorkeling.

The Sound and Light Show at the Cellular Jail is another place worth watching. It evokes the memories of exiled political prisoners banned here at the time of India’s struggle for independence.

There are many islands with beaches. Neil Island, North Passage Island, Havelock Island, Long Island, Cinque Island, Baratang Island, Diglipur, Rangat, Mayabunder, Chiriya Tapoo, and Little Andaman Island.

There is a very tiny and picturesque beach, Ranghat, Baratang, Diglipur, and Mayabunder. Corbyn's Cove is another 20-minute drive from Port Blair, which is great for swimming, water baths, and sunbathing. The tourism complex there also has the facilities for scuba diving and other sports.

Other places include tour around Chatham Sawmill, a 5 km of Aberdeen Bazaar (the largest wood processor in the world). There are other attractions as well but needs a special permit for Middle Islands, Little Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and North Andaman.


SHOPPING IN ANDAMAN

There are many handicraft emporiums in and around Andaman. Tourists can shop for beautifully hand crafted items like wood carvings, shell jewellery, cane furniture, and bamboo furniture. Andaman Handicrafts Emporium, Sagarika Emporium, and Aberdeen Bazaar are preferred for shopping clothes and household items.

EVENTS AND FESTIVALS IN ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS

One of the major festivals celebrated here in Andaman is the Island Tourism Festival that is celebrated every year between December and February in Port Blair for 15 days. The exhibition mainly highlights the development of tourism. Artists of national and international fame and cultural groups are invited to give their performances. Competitions like water sports and the Nicobari "Hodi" race are organized during festival. One of the major attractions during this festival is the Andaman dog show.
