High blood pressure occurs due to the pressure of the blood in the arteries. Blood pressure (hypertension) is recorded as the systolic pressure (as the heart beats) over the diastolic pressure (time between two beats). A consistent blood pressure (BP) reading of 140/90 mm Hg or higher is considered as high blood pressure. When untreated, high blood pressure may cause strokes, heart attacks, kidney failures, and brain and eye injuries.

Celery contains high levels of 3-N-butylphthalide, a kind of photochemical which helps a lot in controlling high BP levels. You can eat a few stalks of celery as a simple snack food everyday.

The magnesium and potassium present in the boiled potatoes are very effective in lowering high blood pressure.

Grape fruit is one more home remedy in preventing high blood pressure.

A clove of garlic popularly known is highly recommended for treating high blood pressure. Take 1 or 2 cloves of garlic daily with your meals. 

Vegetables such as carrots and spinach play a very significant role in lowering BP. Drink a glass of this juice twice a day to keep your blood pressure under control.

Amla (Indian Gooseberry) is also said to be an effective home remedy for treating high BP. Mix 1 tablespoon of amla juice with an equal amount of honey to be taken daily in the morning before breakfast.

Watermelon seeds are also said to be another home remedy for high blood pressure. Take some dry roasted seeds and grind them and then add these seeds to 2 cups of water and boil for about 10 minutes and strain the water and take daily in the mornings and evenings.

Make a mixture of 1 tsp of honey and ginger juice with 1 teaspoon of cumin powder and stir well.  Take this mixture twice a day.
