Confirming Pregnancy With Home Pregnancy Test

Home Pregnancy Tests

As soon as you suspect that you might be pregnant, you can definitely find this out with certainty with Home Pregnancy Test.  Home pregnancy testing is quick and easy and can give you a very reliable answer as soon as you missed your period.

Advancements in laboratory testings have now reached to a stage where we have got an access to easily used reliable pregnancy test kits over-the-counter.

In pregnancy, the growing tissues of the early fetus secrete a special hormone into your body called HCG (human Chorionic Gonadotrophin). This enters your blood as early as one week of fertilization.  This can be traced from your urine or blood through special tests. Home pregnancy tests are done with urine sample. Depending on the type and sensitivity of the test used, pregnancy can be noticed as early as a day or two from her missed period.

The following are the tests currently available that detects pregnancy within 7 days of your missed period:
  • Pregcolor card .
  • Velocit one step pregnancy test
The above two tests need a higher level of HCG before they show positive results, hence they become positive after 5 weeks from the last menstrual period.

Some home pregnancy tests (HPT’s) are more sensitive than others. The more sensitive home pregnancy tests may detect low levels of hCG as early as 4 days before your period is due or 7 days after conception.

The sensitivity of a home pregnancy test is described on the packaging itself as mIU/ml (milli-International Unit per millilitre). Home pregnancy tests range in sensitivity from 10mIU/ml to 40 mlU/ml. The lower the number of units, the more sensitive the test is and the earlier it can detect pregnancy.

If you try to test too early in pregnancy even with a sensitive home pregnancy test, the amount of hCG in your urine may not be high enough to detect any positive results. When a test gives a false negative result, you can be stressful.

Most of the home pregnancy tests will give you accurate results if you test at the right time that is about 2 weeks after you ovulate or one week after you miss your period.

A home pregnancy test may be negative for several reasons; you may not be pregnant, you may have ovulated later than you thought, or may not be as far along as you thought in your pregnancy.

If your test shows a negative result and you still did not get your period, try to test again after 3 days. If you are truly pregnant, the levels of hormones may build up enough by then.

For best and accurate results, you must take care that:
  • Early morning first urine sample is preferred.
  • The urine is collected in a clean and dry container.
It is possible that a test result comes negative although you are pregnant in reality. This is because:
  • Your cycles are often delayed or irregular.
  • The testing is done too early. In such cases, if the test is repeated after 1 week, this may show a positive result.
It is suggested to confirm your pregnancy by a qualified medical practitioner as all of the tests have their own limitations.
