How To Do An Abortion With Pills ?

What is Medical Abortion or Induced Abortion?

The best and the safest way for a woman do an abortion herself till the 12th week of pregnancy is with abortion pills (called medical abortion or induced abortion) with the use of 2 medicines called Mifepristone and Misoprostol. Using Misoprostol or Cytotec alone to cause an abortion can be successful in 90% of the cases. If this is not effective for the first time, you can give it another try after three days. The above information is based on the WHO (World Health Organization)

Some women try to have an abortion by punching her belly or by placing a sharp or dirty object into the womb. This is extremely dangerous and should never do it because there is a high risk of getting wounds inside, infections, heavy bleeding, and even death.

How does the pill Misoprostol work?

Misoprostol works well in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.  After which, there may be an increased risk of complications and need for medical attention.  If you are considered using misoprostol after 12 weeks of pregnancy, please contact your health care provider.

Misoprostol makes contractions of the womb. As a consequence, the womb expels out the pregnancy. A woman will get painful abdominal cramps, vaginal bleeding more than a normal menstrual periods, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Sometimes, there will be a risk of heavy bleeding which needs a medical attention and will have to be treated by a doctor.

An abortion with Misoprostol will be successful in 90% of the cases.

Important information that every woman should know before proceeding with an induced abortion or medical abortion:

A woman should make sure she is pregnant by doing a pregnancy test or have an ultrasound.

A woman should have an ultrasound before taking Misoprostol to make sure the pregnancy is in the womb and not outside the wall and to know the number of weeks she is in her pregnancy.

Misoprostol should not be used for pregnancy after 12 or more weeks because the medicine may work, but the risk of extreme pain and heavy bleeding increases with the length of the pregnancy.

Misoprostol should be used if only a woman is 100% sure that she wants to terminate her pregnancy.

A woman should not do the medical abortion alone by herself and should have someone with her to help her in case of emergency or complications.

Misoprostol should not be used in terminating the pregnancy when there is a possibility of an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs outside the womb and this can be accessed by an ultrasound. If the ectopic pregnancy is not treated, there is a risk of heavy internal bleeding due to a rupture of the fallopian tubes. Ectopic pregnancy cannot be terminated with Misoprostol.

Misoprostol should not be used if a woman has an intra uterine device (IUD) placed. IUD is a kind of contraceptive that a small coil of about 3 cm is inserted by a doctor in the womb to prevent pregnancy. A woman with IUD and is pregnant should have an ultrasound done, as there is a high risk of ectopic pregnancy in the uterus in a woman who has IUD placed. It is highly necessary to have the IUD removed before processing the abortion.

Never consume alcohol or use drugs during the treatment. A woman should pay a very close attention to what is going on in her body.  If the cramps are extremely painful, she may use Ibuprofen, hot water bottle, or heating pad to manage it.

Misoprostol should be used if only there is transportation within minutes to a hospital is possible, so that if any complications occur, medical aid will be closer.

Misoprostol should not be used if a woman is allergic to Misoprostol or any other prostaglandin drugs.
