Tips On How To Increase Breast Milk

How to increase breast milk ?

Many mothers worry about whether she is producing enough milk for her baby. As we cannot measure how much milk a breastfed baby is getting, the best way is to checking your baby’s weight and growth when you go for a checkup and if your doctor tells your baby is putting on weight normally, and then it is evident enough that you are producing enough milk to satisfy your baby.

Your breasts do not feel full when your baby is around six weeks to two months old and this is quite normal. Growth spurts may make your baby requiring feeds more often and longer.

Growth spurts can encounter around 3 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 months of age or can happen at any point of time. Do not worry that your milk supply is too low to satisfy your baby’s hunger. Feeding more often will help enhancing your milk production. Once your milk production increases, you can resume back to your normal routine.

Tips on how to increase breast milk supply:

  1. Make sure your baby is positioned well during breastfeeding.
  2. Offer your baby both the breasts at each feeding and have your baby stay at the first breast as long as she wants and offer the second breast when your baby slows down or stops sucking.
  3. Feed your baby more often. Your body releases prolactin hormones each time you feed your baby, which further stimulate the formation of milk.
  4. Avoid giving your baby formula or cereals as this may further lead to less interest in breast milk, which may result in decreasing your milk supply. Your baby does not require solid foods until she is 6 months old.
  5. Check with your baby’s wet diapers – If your baby wets six diapers in 24 hours time, your baby is getting enough milk.
