Constipation And Heartburn During Pregnancy

Constipation during pregnancy

Many women complain of constipation during pregnancy. The signs of constipation include hard and dry stools, less than three bowel movements per week and painful bowel movements. This occurs due to the high levels of hormones that slow down the digestion system and also the pressure of expanding uterus on the bowels contributes to constipation.

Try doing the below to minimize the constipation during pregnancy
  • Take plenty of fluids and drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water every day.
  • Do not drink coffee.
  • Take foods that are rich in fiber such as raw vegetables, fresh fruits, dry fruits, whole grain cereals, and breads.
  • Try doing some mild physical activity.
Indigestion and Heartburn during pregnancy

The pressure of the growing uterus and hormones can cause indigestion and heartburn during pregnancy. Pregnancy hormones slow down the digestive tract muscles, so the food tends to move very slowly and digestion becomes sluggish. This makes many pregnant women feel bloated.

Hormones also relax the valve that separates esophagus from the stomach, which allows food and acids to come back from the stomach to the esophagus. The food and acids causes heartburn. As your baby gets bigger, your uterus pushes pressure on the stomach making heartburn to become more common in later pregnancy.

Try doing the below to minimize the heartburn during pregnancy
  • Take several small meals instead of 3 large meals and eat slowly.
  • Do not lie down immediately after meals
  • Drink fluids between meals and not with meals.
  • Do not eat greasy and fry items.
  • Avoid citrus fruits, juices, and spicy foods.
  • Never eat or drink within a few hours before bedtime.
