Importance of Food safety During pregnancy


Pregnancy can be one of the most exciting movements in anyone’s life. Following a healthy diet is very crucial and an important way to make sure that you and your baby are getting the required nutrients.

Due to various changes taking place in your body, both you and your baby are at a risk for food poisoning (also called food borne illness or food-related illness). This is because your immune system becomes weak, which makes it more difficult to fight the infections.

Food can be contaminated by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Always protect yourself and your baby by following the below steps and by avoiding some foods.


Health risks


Some people get food poisoning without knowing they have it. Food poisoning is caused due to eating foods that are contaminated. Certain bacteria, viruses, or parasites can cross the placenta and increase the chance that your baby may get infected.

Your baby's immune system may not have developed enough to fight with harmful bacteria. For mother, food poisoning may cause symptoms such as: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, chills, headaches, and body aches.

Pregnant women are at a risk of 20 times more as compared to other healthy adults developing listeriosis when they are exposed to the Listeria bacteria.

Food borne bacteria can be more dangerous for your baby's health. If you get food poisoning during the first trimester of pregnancy, it can lead to a miscarriage. Later in your pregnancy, your baby could be delivered prematurely. Food borne illness also causes a stillbirth or a baby born extremely ill. Since your baby is dependent on you for all the baby needs, it is highly important that you pay a very close attention to what you eat.


Cleaning




Washing your hands, kitchen surfaces, kitchen utensils, and fruit and vegetables will help eliminate bacteria and reduce the risk of food related illness.

  • Use regular soap to clean your hands. An alcohol based hand rub can be used if soap and water is not available.
  • Use a separate chopping board for raw meat, poultry, and fish.
  • Change kitchen wipe clothes to wipe kitchen surfaces to avoid the risk of cross contamination and spread of bacteria. Never use sponges to clean because they are harder to keep the bacteria free.
  • Sanitize your kitchen countertops, cutting boards, and utensils before and after the food preparation.
